I’m taking a little break from recipes today to talk about the XL Foods meat recall that has been going on in Canada for the past couple weeks. I was watching Rick Mercer Report last night, a Canadian Daily Show of sorts, and he addressed the subject in his rant. Mercer brought up some excellent points. Canadians need more transparency when it comes to the health and safety of our food and in-turn its people. The video of the rant is below.
Just some background information about the XL Food recall:
The main plant, Lakeside Packers Division, was shut down on September 27 when the Canadian Food Inspection Agency linked them with several beef products that were tainted with E coli. Since then more than 1800 products have been recalled, and 10 people have been infected with the potentially fatal bacteria.
